December 28, 2019 — Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noel.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643 – 1704) was a prolific and celebrated French composer of the Baroque era, who brought Italian influences to bear on French music. His patrons included aristocrats and Jesuits, and he collaborated with Molière on the Parisian stage. The prelude to his Te Deum is used today as the signature tune for the European Broadcasting Union, heard in the opening credits of Eurovision events.

The annual reading of Charpentier's Christmas Mass (1690) has become an EMSNS holiday tradition, and will take place this year on December 28. We'll also have a chance to sing through the ancient French carols underlying this beloved work. All singers and instrumentalists welcome (note 7pm start time).

Saturday, December 28, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
St. George's Round Church
2222 Brunswick St., Halifax
Free for EMSNS members. Non-members are welcome by donation.

January 25, 2020 — Mid-Winter Tune-Up

The Mid-Winter Tune-Up is one of our most enduring and popular events.

Come and play/sing some of whatever you've been working on by yourself or with a group, in a convivial, non-judgmental, supportive atmosphere—or just be part of the audience. As always, we'll finish the evening with snacks and drinks, so please bring finger foods, and we'll provide the drinks!

All members of the EMS, or ensembles including at least one member, are invited to share the music on which they have been working. The only restriction is a time limit of 8 minutes.

If you are interested in participating, please email Jay Perry at jayperry@ns.sympatico.ca, or phone 902-425-3828 and leave a message, by Sunday, Jan 20. Please include the following information:

• name of performer/group.
• instrumentation comprising your group.
• title, composer and date (if known or approximate) of the composition.
• duration of the piece (approximate).
• number of chairs needed to seat your entry, and the names of those occupying the seats (for planning the program to minimize traffic crossing the floor during performances)
• any special requirements for your performance (e.g. need a harpsichord, etc.)

Please bring your own music stands and lights.

We're looking forward to hearing your musical offerings! And do invite your friends to come and listen.

Saturday, January 25, 7:30 p.m.

If you are an instrumentalist, come join the dance band for all or part of the evening!

Please email Jennifer Publicover at emsns@chebucto.ns.ca if you'd like to play (and your instrument) – we would like to have an idea of numbers.

Back by popular demand, Geoffrey Lee-Dadswell teaches easy dances from the courts of 15th-17th century France, Italy, Spain and England.

Join members of the Early Music Society as we enjoy an evening of dance accompanied with a live band of early music society musicians.
